In the build-up to our Premier League return and the visit of Bournemouth to Stamford Bridge, Jorginho has been discussing domestic football’s resumption, the need for Chelsea to restart strongly and his own future in west London.
The Italian international has been a frustrated spectator in recent weeks given the European champions’ absence from the World Cup in Qatar, admitting he struggled to watch the early part of the tournament before being drawn into the latter stages.
A short break from work and a week-long trip to Abu Dhabi with the remaining players not on international duty is how Jorginho has spent this period and he has been grateful for the rare opportunity to step away and switch off.
‘It was a good break because when you’re in this situation where so much happens and then you have a little bit of time to work more together and have this break to clear your mind and take a direction to move forward, it’s really good,’ he said.
‘We worked a lot and it was good for the coach and the staff. In the end, not having all the players available makes it harder as well but it was a nice week in Abu Dhabi and having the guys back from injury is always good. They’re going to help us coming back now and everyone is just happy that they’re back.’
Jorginho has also used the time to get to know Graham Potter, his fourth head coach as a Chelsea player, a little better. The stay together in the Middle East was important to build relationships and the midfielder now feels he understands his new boss better both as a coach and a person.
‘He has his clear ideas but, like every coach, he needs a bit of time to give the players his ideas and make the players understand what he demands from the team,’ continued our number five.
‘With this time, he’ll be able to do it because for me he’s a really good manager - not just the way he works on the pitch but as a person as well.
‘I think he’s doing a really good job and now it’s just time for the results to come our way. Him and his staff, they are really nice guys and they work hard. What they really want is to win games and for the people they are, they really deserve it so I will try my best to help them to do it.’
Jorginho’s current contract at Stamford Bridge runs out in the summer but the 31-year-old insists there is no great rush to make things happen because he remains very happy at the club.
‘Of course I do, I love Chelsea,’ he said when asked if he wanted to stay. ‘But this is something I’m not going to think about now. I need to think about winning games, otherwise we have a problem.
‘I’ll focus game by game and then we’ll see what’s going to happen. My mind is only on Chelsea and trying to win as many games as possible.’
Our Premier League campaign resumes with a visit from Bournemouth, who are five points below the ninth-placed Blues. Having gone into the winter break on the back of four defeats in five games, Jorginho is well aware that form and results must improve fast.
‘I cannot wait to be playing Premier League games again because it’s been quite long this month with the World Cup,’ he added. ‘We are all excited to start again.
‘Now comes the most important moment of the season after Christmas, where every single point matters. It’s the moment the competitions go in that direction where you can see where you might end up.
‘We can’t underestimate any team, especially in this Premier League because there are no easy games. If we go with the focus and level of attention high, we can do well and win, but if we underestimate Bournemouth then it might be a problem.’
