Chelsea winger Guro Reiten is determined to create more memories at Stamford Bridge when we face Manchester United on home soil in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday.
Having seen the first half of her season disrupted by injury, the 29-year-old returned to the fold in December and is eager to make an impact as we prepare to compete across four competitions, starting with a tantilising meeting with Manchester United on Sunday.
There is history between the two teams, chapters in seasons gone by where Guro Reiten has been among the main characters and this weekend, the Norwegian will return to a venue which has a special place in her heart.
Reiten played her first game for Chelsea at the Bridge against Tottenham in 2019 and grabbed a goal there against the same opponents last season. She reflects fondly on our experiences there and speaks of her desire to create more great memories.
‘We love playing at the Bridge,' said Reiten. 'A bigger stadium and more fans, creating a great atmosphere. Obviously I remember the penalty against Tottenham, but for me it’s the Lyon game and everything about that. That is Stamford Bridge for me. Hopefully we can keep creating great memories here this season.
‘My first game was at the Bridge – what a great memory. There were 25,000 fans and Beth England scored a screamer. It was a great way to start my Chelsea journey. I was coming from Norway, playing in front of a couple of hundred fans, and then my first game in England is at the Bridge in front of 25,000. Obviously a big change, but it was very cool.’
An excellent 2022/23 season saw Reiten make a number of hugely significant contributions and, having dealt with the frustration caused by injury earlier in this campaign, she has returned with an appetite to play her part in our quest for success.
‘That was a very good period for me. I scored a few very important goals, which was very good. But it doesn’t really matter if I’m the one scoring, as long as someone in our team does it I’m going to be super excited.
‘Our goal is obviously to win and, to me, it doesn’t really matter who scores or assists. You just want to do your job and play your part. I’m obviously excited to be back on the pitch and ready to go, and I’m going to do my best to impact our performances as much as I can.'
With plenty of knowledge and experience gathered from previous encounters with Manchester United, Reiten knows the challenge they will pose and understands the importance of carrying out our game plan to good effect.
‘It’s going to be a tough game. They want revenge for the FA Cup final, which is the last time we played them. They’re going to come here and really want to win this game, so we’ve got to be ready for it.
‘We’ve got to make sure everyone knows the game-plan and that we execute that.’
