A Sam Kerr hat-trick and a late Sophie Ingle strike helped Chelsea to a 4-1 victory over Paris FC – and an important three points in our UEFA Women's Champions League group stage campaign.
Kerr opened the scoring in the first half after excellent work from Lauren James. However, the game was level at the interval after Thea Greboval's guided header beat Ann-Katrin Berger and the covering Jess Carter.
Yet Chelsea and Kerr moved through the gears after the break. Our second came from the Australian after a well-crafted attack, the third was an excellent chipped effort from 20 yards. Ingle's late strike put further gloss on a fine night's work from Emma Hayes's side.
Changes made
Five changes were made to the Chelsea starting XI. In came Berger, Ashley Lawrence, Kadeisha Buchanan, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, and Jessie Fleming. Out stepped Zecira Musovic, Eve Perisset, Maren Mjelde, Ingle, and Aggie Beever-Jones,
Hayes will have wanted her side to maintain the momentum built at Stamford Bridge on Saturday against Liverpool. Yet it was the visitors who made the better start and Berger had to be alert to deny Bourdieu early on.
Chelsea soon wrestled control and Erin Cuthbert fashioned an excellent chance for James to open the scoring. Unfortunately, the Blues winger guided her shot high and wide of Chiamaka Nnadozie's goal.
James proved more decisive on the half-hour mark. After she received the ball out wide, James cut inside and clipped a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Kerr six yards out. The result was inevitable. Chelsea were ahead.
A second almost followed. Kaneryd reclaimed the ball on the edge of the Paris penalty area, exchanged passes with Kerr, and drove a low effort across goal. Nnadozie this time was in the way.
It was, at the time, an important moment for the French side as they drew level before the interval. A corner was flighted to the back post and Greboval's looping header beat Berger and, despite her best efforts on the line, Carter.
A quick response
A better second-half display was needed – and Fran Kirby was introduced at the interval. The response did arrive, and quickly, but only after Berger produced a reaction stop to deny Bourdieu.
Kerr was again the Chelsea goalscorer. Kaneryd this time the architect. The Swedish winger received the ball down the right flank and delivered an inch-perfect cross for Kerr to stab home at the back post.
A one-goal lead became a two-goal advantage soon after. There was nothing fancy about the construction of our third – a long pass forward from Berger – yet Kerr's lifted finish from 20 yards was exquisite, and the latest demonstration of her undeniable quality.
Still, Chelsea pushed forward. Cuthbert flashed a shot over the crossbar from distance before Kaneryd and Kirby sliced open the Paris defence to fashion a chance for Kerr. It was, surprisingly, not taken.
Paris still carried a threat and Berger had to be alert to deny Julie Dufour from inside the penalty area. But it proved the last scare of the contest for Hayes' side – and a fourth goal was added in second-half stoppage time.
Two substitutes combined: Eve Perisset delivered a corner and Sophie Ingle was given time to guide her finish beyond Nnadozie. It proved a fitting end to a fine second-half performance, one that secured an important three points in Group D for the Blues.
What it means?
It's a result that leaves the Blues second in their group after two matches. Hacken, following their victory over Real Madrid earlier in the night, sit top. Chelsea face the Swedish side next month at Stamford Bridge.
What’s next?
Another quick turnaround sees the Blues return to Kingsmeadow this Sunday for our last game before the next international break. We will take on Leicester City in the Women’s Super League, with kick-off scheduled for 2.00pm (UK time).
