Chelsea Under-21s take on Colchester United in our second Premier League Cup group-stage game and, with that game in sight, Mark Robinson used our London derby defeat earlier in the week to reflect on what our boys should avoid going into this game...

The Wallace Binder Stadium will host Chelsea Under-21s' Premier League Cup tie against Colchester United on Friday evening with kick-off scheduled at 7pm.

Robinson's team already have three points on the board after a convincing win against Luton Town in our first game and they will be in search of another three points on Friday evening.

The U's played well in their first game of the competition as they faced Leeds United but were on the wrong side of a 3-2 scoreline.

Nonetheless, Robinson is wary of the threat they pose and wants to make sure that his boys are not complacent and handle the task ahead.

'We only have a small Under-21s squad due to most of last season's squad getting good loans. It means there are excellent opportunities for our Under-18s to step up. Having said that, there is absolutely no chance of any complacency against Colchester.

'For many years [at AFC Wimbledon], I saw the great work that goes on at Category Two and Category Three academies, as well as them enjoying many victories against Category One academies.

'We will give them the absolute respect they deserve and know our young group will have to be at their very best to win.'

Robinson spoke about setting expectations for the players but also ensuring that there is a safe space for development too. It is important to strike that balance, especially because the team is younger.

'It is all about standards and trying to affect the game in a positive way. You cannot paint a picture for players of working hard for each other and not being afraid to express themselves, then chastise them if they make a mistake. You need to reflect together, see what they saw, and have a positive action moving forward.'

Robinson continued: 'If the mistake is due to lack of effort that is a different matter. When you wear a Chelsea shirt you need to be accountable for certain behaviours.

'If it is a decision-making error or a technical error then it is just part of the development process between the player and coach.'

These were important words as, despite being ahead late into our last game against PL2 leaders Spurs, we suffered defeat following individual and team errors late on.

'The mistakes leading to the goals conceded against Tottenham hurt because we were 2-1 up and in control with a vastly younger team. However, you cannot educate with emotion.

'You need to know what they were seeing and their intention, why they made the decision. Then you come to a conclusion together.'

He added: 'Often a mistake may involve a lot more than the player on the ball, so it can also be a collective discussion with several players or the whole squad.

'The errors we committed against Tottenham were all within our style of play and with good intentions, but stemmed from a lack of technical detail and misreading a situation. The players gave me those answers and we discussed how they and we improve.'

Our young Blues will be looking to rectify those errors and secure all three points tomorrow evening.
