As the ball looped in her direction, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd only had one thought in her mind. That was to meet Millie Bright’s cross on the full and go for goal. What followed was as perfectly executed a volley as you could ever wish to see.

Rytting Kaneryd used her instep (pictured top) to guide her effort back across goal and into the far corner, the ball swerving deliciously inside the post. The Swede used the pace on Bright’s cross to ensure Becky Spencer in the Tottenham goal had no chance. It put the Blues 3-1 up, and ended any hopes the visitors might have held of staging a second comeback of the game.

‘I think it’s the best goal I’ve ever scored!’ assessed Rytting Kaneryd afterwards.

‘I haven’t been scoring on the volley like that, so it must be. It was all about getting in the box. That’s something I have been working on. It was just about getting there first. I did my best to try and place it. I haven’t seen it back, but the touch felt good!’

The goal, and another superb individual effort from Rytting Kaneryd that followed in stoppage time, rounds off an eye-catching start to the new campaign for the 27-year-old. She already has three goals and four assists to her name, and JRK is quick to credit Sonia Bompastor and her staff for her development in recent months.

‘They are a huge part of this,’ she said.

‘They’ve been very clear with me from the beginning they want me to do: 1 v 1s, use my speed, do what I’m good at. It’s always good to have their support.

‘I feel like I keep on taking steps every day, every game. I’m consistently playing, and of course feeling in good physical shape. Then I can do more of what I’m good at. It’s all about confidence and believing in yourself.’

Of the game as a whole, which finished 5-2 to Chelsea, Rytting Kaneryd noted with satisfaction both our positive reaction to Tottenham’s equaliser, and the manner in which we were willing to scrap when required.

‘Tottenham are a good team, with a lot of good players and intensity in their game, and a lot of deep runs. It was a physical game but we had a really good intensity.

‘This is how we want to play for Chelsea. Overall, it was a good performance, and we are taking steps as a team.’
