Sam Kerr produced another masterclass in front of goal during Chelsea Women’s FA Cup victory against Liverpool on Sunday, and afterwards the striker reflected on the hat-trick that won a hard-fought tie.
Kerr bagged her second treble of the campaign to keep up her fine run of scoring form in home fixtures. Of her 16 goals so far this season, 11 have come at either Kingsmeadow or Stamford Bridge, and she had a similarly prolific record last term, too. She was asked why she relishes home comforts.
‘Because I live nine minutes away and sleep in my own bed and eat my own food!’ she laughed.
‘No, I just like being at home and playing in front of our amazing fans. There’s something nice about Kingsmeadow.
‘There’s plenty that needs improvement,’ added Kerr of her own game.
‘I wish I could do this every week but that’s a striker’s life, sometimes they go in, sometimes they don’t. When my teams are putting in balls like they did, it’s pretty easy to score.’
On the cup tie itself, which the Blues eventually won 3-2 despite a late scare, Kerr prioritised the outcome over the performance in her analysis.
‘All we had to do was win to be in the hat, we’ve done that and we’re happy,’ she enthused.
‘They’re a good team and they gave us problems. We just had to be calm and play our game. The first game of the season there we didn’t play as ourselves, so it was about that.
‘We let them back into it two times so obviously not the most comfortable ending. It is a little bit nervy when it’s only a one-goal buffer, but we held strong in the end and dealt with it well.’
