Chelsea striker Sam Kerr is preparing to captain her country when Australia host the Women’s World Cup alongside New Zealand this summer.
Manager Tony Gustavsson named a 29-player provisional squad on Monday morning with Kerr set to star at the hotly-anticipated event on home soil, where the Matildas will be looking to capitalise on the home support and progress beyond the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time.
Domestically, it was a memorable season for Kerr who was a key player in our league and FA Cup double-winning campaign. She made her 100th Blues appearance, netted her 50th Barclays Women’s Super League goal and collected several individual accolades along the way.
She was voted Chelsea Women’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season, while being awarded the Football Writers Association Women’s Footballer of the Year prize for the second consecutive season. She will look to replicate this form for her country on the world stage.
The draw for the finals this summer placed Australia in Group B alongside Canada, Nigeria and the Republic of Ireland. The Matildas get their group stage campaign underway against the Republic of Ireland on July 20 in Sydney, with kick-off scheduled for 11am (UK time)
