Assist-king Jadon Sancho has thanked the Chelsea fans for the reception they gave him on his Stamford Bridge bow, while also praising the ‘incredible quality’ of four-goal Cole Palmer.

The Blues defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 4-2 at Stamford Bridge yesterday, with all the action coming in a chaotic first 45 minutes – with Palmer netting all of the Chelsea goals to become the first player in Premier League history to score four in the first half.

Sancho, who won a penalty and assisted Palmer, put in another eye-catching display on the flank and we caught up with him post-match to reflect on his home debut, with the England international saving plenty of praise for team-mate Palmer.

‘It was a very intense game as you could see from the scoreline,’ Jadon concluded at full-time.

‘We kept working hard, we stuck to the game-plan even when we went behind so early on, and we knew that if we did this then we would get chances in front of goal.

‘Then it would just be up to us to take them, which we did – well, Cole did!

‘When you have a player in your team like Cole Palmer, then anything is possible. I’ve known Cole a long time, since our days together at City. I’ve always watched him and I always thought he would go on to be a great player. He’s showing that now at Chelsea.

‘We see what he’s capable of each day in training, we see the quality he has and honestly, it’s no real surprise to me to see him score four goals.

‘In fact, he could have scored five or six goals! I’m sure he will be fuming not to add to his tally but in all seriousness, he’s such a quality player.

‘Having a player like Cole alongside you is very good and I’m happy to assist him.’

It was another impressed display on the wing for Sancho, who won the penalty for Palmer’s second strike and also assisted him for another goal.

That’s now three assists for the England international in three games for Chelsea since his switch from Manchester United on loan and Sancho has reflected on his start to life in Blue, with the wideman pleased with his contribution but now aiming to add another dimension to his game – goals.

‘I thought I started off a bit slow [against Brighton] but I feel like I grew into the game,’ he added. ‘I managed to win the penalty and I got the assist for Cole, so I’m happy to be able to contribute.

‘Overall, I was just happy to play at Stamford Bridge for the first time as a Chelsea player. It was a great feeling and I really appreciated the reception I got from the fans.

‘It was a great feeling [to get a standing ovation from the fans] and my family and friends were in the crowd for the game, so that made it extra special.

‘I’m happy to have been able to assist for goals in recent games, I’m settling in well here and I just want to keep this momentum going and keep being able to assist my team-mates. Or even get a first goal, that would be nice!’
