Frank Lampard has expressed his excitement at once again returning to the home dugout at Stamford Bridge but insists he will have his ‘serious face’ on against Brighton.
The Blues welcome the Seagulls to west London looking to return to winning ways following defeats on the road to Wolves and Real Madrid in Lampard’s opening two games as caretaker manager.
There have been positives in the performances but, ultimately, they have not produced any points and Lampard is keen to mark his return to SW6 with victory against an impressive Brighton side.
‘I’m delighted to be back and it will never fall short to me how much of an honour it is to be manager of Chelsea,’ Lampard explained.
‘I’ve done the job before for a season and a half, I loved pretty much every minute and I’m happy to be back again now.
‘This place is of course very special to me, I’ve performed here in one way or the other for a long time and I’ve had some amazing times here over many years, but my overriding feeling is absolutely to focus on the job in hand.
‘We have to get wins on the board. Of course, it will be special to be in the home dugout again and I appreciate the support I’m sure I’ll get but I’ll have my serious face on as we try and record three points.’
Roberto De Zerbi, who replaced Graham Potter as Brighton manager earlier this season, will come up against Lampard and our all-time leading scorer has said he has been really impressed by the work of the Italian.
‘Under Roberto they’ve been really good,’ Lampard said of tomorrow’s opponents.
‘They’ve impressed everyone, they’ve played with a certain style and identity and they’re really progressing as a club.
‘Roberto has taken the work Graham did to begin with and taken it on further. They’ve got stability as a club and they’re starting to show that on the pitch too.
‘They’re a really good team, both offensively and defensively, and this is going to be a really tough game for us between the two Real Madrid games.
‘We have to compete with them physically and technically and that’s something I’m really focused on.’
