It was as an Under-8 that Sol Gordon joined Chelsea. He has developed on and off the pitch in the years that have followed and is this season making an impact for our Under-18s side.
It was through our development centre programme that Sol became a Chelsea player and he has steadily worked his way up through the ranks at Cobham.
The midfielder has made the step up from Under-16s football this term and has quickly impressed by helping our Under-18s record back-to-back league wins against Aston Villa and West Ham United.
Yet the 16-year-old acknowledges the challenges he – and also his team-mates – have faced in the early weeks of the season.
'It’s been a tough start to the season,' he began. 'But I feel like as a team we’ve grown and settled into it. I’m pleased with my performances, I've worked hard and feel like I’ve been rewarded with goals and assists.
'The biggest difference between Under-16s and Under-18s football is the physicality. Everyone’s grown in height and muscle, there’s more of a challenge. But I feel like I’ve adapted well and worked hard to keep up and continue growing.
'One thing that’s helped is understanding the importance of self-care and knowing what my body needs to grow. Without a healthy body, I couldn’t do what I love and I never take that for granted.
'I feel like I’ve shown signs of progression from the start of the season until now – and we’re only at the beginning. That can be said for the rest of the squad too and it’s reflected in our results. It feels good and I’m happy with where I’m at so far.'
This summer, Sol signed his scholarship at Stamford Bridge alongside 10 of his Academy team-mates. It was a surreal moment for the young Blue and his family and offered a glimpse into something he has dreamt of since he was a boy.
'I’ve always imagined myself playing there, and I hope that day comes soon,' he said. 'Stepping out onto the pitch felt so different from watching a men’s match from the stands. It’s huge and feels like a stage, which I guess it is.
'Seeing the stands, walking down the tunnel, and getting a feel for the pitch was incredible. It’s everything I’ve wanted since joining as an Under-8. Chelsea means everything to me. I’ve been at the club since I was a young boy and have worked my way up.
'There have been tough moments and every footballer will say there are highs and lows. But it’s the highs, and the love of what you do, that push you further toward your dreams. That moment was one of my biggest highs, if not the biggest.
'One day, I know I’ll see my family and friends in the stands while I play a senior game. That moment will be special and I can’t wait for it.'
Reflecting on our Under-18s' recent strong performances, Gordon emphasises the importance of building connections within the squad that he believes are key to fighting for silverware this season.
'I feel like I’ve embraced the challenge. It took a few games to get into the rhythm, but a busy schedule makes it easier to stay sharp. Although it’s tiring, it keeps me in top form for the next game.
'As I said, I’m happy with my recent performances and it feels great to see my hard work pay off with goals and assists that help the team. Ultimately, it’s about the team progressing and moving forward.
'Having a close bond with the team is crucial because it helps us connect on the field. We know each other’s strengths and share the same desire to win. I’ve been with the club for most of my childhood, so knowing the boys well off the pitch makes a big difference.'
Gordon also highlights the impact of head coach Hassan Sulaiman, praising him for the lessons that have shaped his development both on and off the pitch.
'Working under Hass is a privilege. He teaches us everything from football skills to how to be better individuals off the pitch.
'Hass drills into us the importance of having the mentality to keep fighting when times are tough. That was crucial to hear when our results at the start of the season weren’t what we were hoping for.
'He’s already taught me so much, and I’m excited to keep learning this season and continue to grow, both on and off the field.'
Looking forward, Gordon wants to take every opportunity to learn and grow and aims to be ready for that moment he has long dreamt about - playing for the men's team.
He said: 'I feel I thrive in those situations. Sometimes I put extra pressure on myself because I want to win and make an impact for the team, but it only makes the outcome better.
'You have to deal with that pressure if you want to make it to the top, that’s just the way it is.
'For now, I’m going to keep working hard and doing what I’m doing. One day, I hope I’ll be across the road, playing where I’ve always dreamed. I love this club and wearing the badge every day means everything to me.'
With our young Blues set to face Newcastle United later today at Cobham, Gordon is hopeful of continuing the team’s winning streak in the Under-18s Premier League Cup.
'These cup competitions are exciting because they test how you handle pressure and intensity. We’ve got Newcastle next and I’m ready for the challenge. It's great that the match is at Cobham as it feels natural playing on the pitches.
'We’re facing a tough side, but I know we’ve got what it takes to win and move further in the competition. I’m ready and know the rest of the boys are too.
'I’m sure we’ll put on a strong performance that not only gets the win but shows our supporters why we are Chelsea players and the next generation.'
