There is no doubt in Sonia Bompastor’s mind that Saturday’s friendly at Kingsmeadow is going to be the start of something special.

The Chelsea head coach will lead her side in front of a home crowd for the first time when we return to Kingsmeadow to host Dutch side Feyenoord in a pre-season friendly.

Bompastor has already had a taste of the Blues support, with fans turning out in impressive numbers for our wins against NJ/NY Gotham and Arsenal during our tour of the USA.

But playing at home for the first time, Bompastor says, will be a different experience entirely. It is an occasion she hopes Blues fans and head coach alike will be left cherishing.

‘I have been imagining having the fans really close to us on the pitch,’ Bompastor says, her face lighting up as she speaks. ‘It is going to be a really special moment for me.

‘It is going to be a really cool atmosphere. I hope we have a really good game because I’ve said it a lot before, but my ambitions and hopes are that we have a good game so the fans can enjoy watching us and be happy at the end.

‘It is maybe something that puts pressure on me, but it is not bad pressure. It’s motivation for me to make sure we work hard and for the fans to enjoy the way that we play.

‘This game is an opportunity to show them our new philosophy, our vision of football and our style. I can’t wait to get there and for the team to be ready to perform for the fans.’

The way in which Bompastor passionately chats about our fans speaks volumes. She knows that without them we would be but a shell of the successful team we are.

That’s why she wants to impress them from the very start of this new era. An era in which she hopes can bring even more cause for celebration.

‘It’s really important because when you are a player what you enjoy is being able to share the good moments with the fans,’ Bompastor added. ‘What I miss the most as a player is not playing, it’s getting to experience these moments with the fans.

‘The fans come to every game. They pay for their tickets and they travel a lot to watch us, so we have to match that and make sure we have the right mentality to give all our energy on the pitch.

‘We want to show them how much pride we have to wear the Chelsea jersey. We want to make sure the fans are proud to see their team play and the efforts that they put in together.’
