Sonia Bompastor hailed a near perfect start from the Blues in our 2-1 derby day win against Arsenal in the Women's Super League, while expressing a desire to a see a more consistent display from her side.

The Blues raced into a 2-0 lead at the Emirates Stadium thanks to goals from Mayra Ramirez and Sandy Baltimore in the fourth and 16th minute, respectively, with both scoring their first league goals of the season. It was 2-1 at half-time as Arsenal halved the deficit through Caitlin Foord in the closing stages of the first half.

Although that goal proved to be just a consolation as a goalless second half meant the Blues secured a third victory from three WLS games, it was a nervy finish in north London as the Gunners applied pressure until the final whistle. But, the Blues battled to maintain our unbeaten start in the WSL!

The victory in north London means Bompastor becomes only the fourth manager to win their opening three matches in the WSL. It also is the first time time the Blues have beat the Gunners in back-to-back games since January 2020.

'I felt it was a really good start,' Bompastor told the media following the derby win. 'It was really close to a perfect way to start, but now I just need to make sure we sustain that and be more consistent to be able to play that style for 90 minutes.

'I wish we were able to possess more of the ball in the second half, managing the tempo of the game, but it is really hard to play against a really good team away from home.

'The good point is that we didn't concede any goals in the second half. We suffered for sure, but it was a good mentality from us not to concede in the second half.

'There is always room for improvement. I clearly see where we need to improve as a team. As I said in the game against Real Madrid, we need to be more consistent. Even though we have a squad who is young, we have experienced players and should be able to manage the tempo in the game better than we did.

'You have to give credit to Arsenal. They were playing the whole game with their fans and that gives you so much power. When they were able to score the goal at the end of the first half, it gives them power. We need to reflect on ourselves and how we can do a better job because I know the quality that this squad has.'

In her post-match press conference, Bompastor was asked about the impact of summer signing Baltimore, who started back-to-back matches for the Blues for the first time and scored her maiden competitive goal for the club.

Our second goal arrived when the French winger, who has also played in a deeper full-back position under Bompastor this season, guided a header goalwards following a pinpoint delivery from Lauren James.

'Sandy is a really good player,' Bompastor added. 'She has a lot of talent on the ball. She's new and learning about the team and the league.

'She can really have a bigger impact on this team. She did have a good game today and she's got more confidence and is building on that. From the Real Madrid game and today, we could see improvements from her.

'She has even more room for improvement, so this is good. How we can help her is making sure that in every game we give her some individual reflection and making sure she can understand how well she can play for this team and what impact she can bring.'
