Sonia Bompastor hailed her side's goal-scoring prowess and mentality after the Blues defeated FC Twente 6-1 at Stamford Bridge in our penultimate UEFA Champions League group stage match.
We overcame the reigning Dutch champions by producing an emphatic display in which Catarina Macario, Oriane Jean-Francois, Mayra Ramirez, Erin Cuthbert, Sjoeke Nusken and Eve Perisset all got on the scoresheet.
After we went 1-0 up inside the opening two minutes, the visitors levelled the game from the penalty spot shortly before the half-hour mark. However, the game wasn't level for long as we re-established our lead two minutes later and then added four further goals.
The victory means the Blues have won all five of our group matches in this season's Champions League and will secure top spot in Group B if we avoid defeat in our final match away to Real Madrid next weekend.
In her post-match press conference following tonight's win, our head coach was asked what she tells her players to help inspire them to put in such a dominant performance.
'They don't really need me' Bompastor told the media. 'When you are a Chelsea player, you are a competitive player, you have a lot of ambitions. I'm trying to match my ambitions with their ambitions and make sure we're on the same page.
'It's also about making sure when we're in a game and if we concede a goal and are not leading that we stay strong mentally. That's really important and that is the confidence I try to bring to my players.
'If something wrong or something bad happens in the game, that's fine, because we still have the talent and the quality to come back. We just have to stay strong individually and collectively to make sure we're all together to come back in the game.'
After scoring six goals against Twente, Bompastor's side has now netted 17 times in our five European matches this term. The Blues head coach was pleased with our haul on Wednesday night but believes it could have been even more.
'It's always good for the confidence to score many goals,' our head coach added. 'Actually, I think we maybe could have scored a little bit more, but those goals are good for the confidence for the individuals and for the team.
'When we analyse the game, we will see good things in the final third and in the box. We were able to be efficient, but I think we still have room for improvement in that area.'
It was a night of mixed emotions for Oriane Jean-Francois, who netted her first goal for the club but soon had to leave the pitch with an injury. Bompastor provided an update on the French midfielder after the match.
'I spoke with her in the locker room and she's fine,' Bompastor said. 'When she jumped for the header, she just twisted her ankle when she was coming down. It doesn't look too bad, but we'll assess her and see how we move forward.'
'It's always good for a player to score,' Bompastor added. 'For Oriane, it's good because that's her first one for the club. It's good for her confidence because she plays in a position where she sometimes doesn't get that much in the box.
'When she has the opportunity to be in that position, she just has to take her chance and she did. She had a great shot. It was deflected a little bit, but it's a goal for her and good for the team also.'
The pick of the goals against Twente was undoubtedly Mayra Ramirez's stunning strike from more than 35 yards out as she lobbed Twente goalkeeper Olivia Clark. It was a finish, Bompastor says, that highlighted what the forward can offer the team.
'Mayra is such a great player,' Bompastor said. 'She has a lot of talent. She's powerful and able to score many goals and in different ways.
'The one that is coming to mind is the one against Manchester City. It was more about her being able to put the ball in the angle. This one against FC Twente is different - scoring from a long-distance shot. She's able to score in different ways and that's good for her and the team.
'For the opposition, you don't know what to expect from her. It's even more difficult, so it's good to have this in the team.'
