After her side dropped points for the first time this season in a draw to Leicester City, Sonia Bompastor was left frustrated, but, the Blues head coach has backed her side to show a reaction when we return to action in midweek.
When the Blues conceded the opening goal in a league match for the first time this season against the Foxes, Bompastor's side was left with a job to do to keep our unbeaten run intact. An equaliser did arrive late in the game, as teenage midfielder Wieke Kaptein pulled us level with a stunning strike in the 77th minute.
And although it is the maiden occasion the Blues have dropped points this season, we remain top of the table going into the winter break and are unbeaten in our 10 league matches this season. Our advantage at the summit stands at six points ahead of tomorrow's WSL fixtures.
But, Bompastor expressed her anger at full-time following the 1-1 draw in the East Midlands, highlighting a performance which was not up to the standards she expects from her Chelsea side.
'For sure frustrated about the performance today,' Bompastor said. 'When we talk about ambitions, we need to turn words into actions. I need my players to be ready from the beginning of the game.
'If you analyse this game, the first half was not intense enough from us. We did not show our intentions and I think we got punished for that. The second half was better - we created more chances and opportunities - but, we only scored one. We were not efficient enough to win this game.'
Bompastor added: 'I'm frustrated because we have talent in the team, but we didn't show that in the first half. The players need to realise this is a competitive league and if you don't show up from the start, you don't get good results.
'It's even more frustrating for me because when the other team plays a really good game, you have to give credit to them. I give credit to Leicester because they were strong defensive. They were all together and mentally tough.
'But, I think we have more talent than that. We had to be able to beat this team today and if you have ambitions to finish at the top of the table, you cannot drop points like we did in this game today.'
The Blues will have an opportunity to put things right when we play our final game of 2024, travelling to Real Madrid in our final group match in the UEFA Champions League. Our head coach says she will be looking for a reaction in that encounter.
'It's good now to see how we react,' Bompastor said. 'How we analyse the performance and how we move forward. We are going to stay together no matter what. That's really important.
'That's easy when you win. When you drop points or when you lose the game, it's also really important to stay together. We have one really important game before the end of the year.
'We need to have a good reflection on the game and move forward to play the last one. It will be an opportunity for us to react, get a win and be in a better place going into the winter break.'
It proved to be a frustrating afternoon, especially considering how much the Blues controlled the game. Bompastor's side registered 28 shots, but only six were on target and had 82 touches in the opposition's box. Our head coach was asked what could have been better to reap the rewards of those statistics.
'We can work on a bit of everything, but when we play this kind of team - a very low and compact block - especially, in the second half then you need to have more creativity on the pitch,' Bompastor said.
'If you analyse the goal from Wieke, she decided to go one-v-one and create space. She shot on goal and was able to score. That's talent. In this type of game, you need to have this talent on the pitch. This creativity. It helps a lot more.
'In some chances, we were not accurate enough. We created chances in the second half, but you have to be more efficient.'
