For the second week running, Sonia Bompastor's side had to come from 1-0 down to defeat Everton, as we beat the Toffees 2-1 in the Women's Super League. Our head coach reflected on the victory, while also hailing match-winner Lauren James and Maelys Mpome who made her first league start for the club.

The Toffees took the lead through Kelly Gago in the 51st minute, but that lasted only 11 minutes as Mayra Ramirez levelled things just after the hour mark with a composed finish. It looked like it may finish 1-1 until James fired a sweet strike into the bottom corner in injury time to secure the Blues all three points.

It was a case of deja vu, not only because Chelsea defeated Everton last weekend in the fifth round of the FA Cup, but also because we had to come from 1-0 down on both occasions to claim the win.

Today's Women's Super League win over the Toffees means Bompastor's side remain seven points clear at the top of the league table, now with 40 points after 14 games played.

'Sometimes it's good for emotions, even for the fans or the players, to live those emotions,' Bompastor said following the win. 'You have to fight until the end.

'As you can see from the beginning of the season, sometimes I do not have a lot of reactions on the goals and everything. But, this one, I reacted a bit more.'

Our head coach continued: 'We knew in transition Everton could hurt us. When we try sometimes to push and score a goal, we leave more space and they had the opportunity to exploit the space. They have the players to do that with Toni Payne and Gago up front.

'They are quick and Gago scored a great goal. I need to give them credit for that. They had a good performance and they came back [from the FA Cup game last weekend] with another mindset and quality out of possession.

'It's deja vu because it's the same case as last week [coming from a goal down]. Today, again, we believed it was possible to come back and win this game. This is what I'm most pleased with.'

Bompastor heaped praise on match-winner James who netted her first goal for Chelsea since September, while also playing 90 minutes for a second consecutive match.

'I have already said a lot about LJ, her potential and all of her talents,' Bompastor said. 'If we didn't have her on the pitch until the end, we couldn't have won the game. That's simple.

'You need to have these creative players and players with these talents to win games. She just showed her magic.

'She has been able to play two 90-minute games, so she's getting back to really good shape. She also defended a lot for the team and that's also something we've been talking about together to make sure she works really hard for the team.'

Mpome made her first WSL start in the win against Everton, having previously made two league appearances from the bench, with Bompastor explaining her decision to name the defender in the XI.

'Maelys is coming from Montpellier in the French league and she's still young' our head coach said. 'She needs to develop as an individual and she's in the right environment working with Chelsea.

'Today was an opportunity for her to start in the league and I think she did well. She had a good performance. She didn't play 90 minutes because she hadn't played in the games before. This league is competitive and intense, so it can be difficult when players don't play consistently and have 90 minutes in the legs.

'She showed with her performance that I can trust her for the future.'

Following the win against Everton, Bompastor provided an update on midfielder Erin Cuthbert who was not included in the matchday squad and goalkeeper Femke Liefting who was withdrawn from the substitutes bench after picking up an injury in the warm-up.

'Erin got a knock on her rib a couple of weeks ago,' she said. 'She could manage it, but this week was a little bit more painful so we were cautious with her. She's staying with us for the international break, but should be back after that.

'Femke twisted her ankle in the warm-up. It doesn't look too bad, but we need to assess her tomorrow and see with a scan.'
