A 1-0 win over Aston Villa in her maiden Women's Super League match as Chelsea head coach left Sonia Bompastor pleased, while she also highlighted the areas in which the Blues can improve on.

A goal from Johanna Rytting Kaneryd saw the Blues claim an opening-day win, with the three points and clean sheet aided by two fantastic late saves from goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.

At a sold-out Kingsmeadow, Bompastor's Blues played out an entertaining encounter which saw both sides register a number of chances. The home side were more prolific early in the first half, while the visitors piled on the pressure in the closing stages to no avail.

'The win and the three points for sure!' Bompastor answered when asked what she will take away from her first victory in the WSL.

'We started good in the game and we were able to score the first goal. We had two or three very clear situations in the box and should've scored more goals.

'In a high level game when you are not able to get the second goal, you just give more confidence to the opposition. Today, maybe we should've score more goals, been more efficient and that would've changed the game for sure.

'We had some great moments in the game. We still have to work on some others, but I'm just happy with the three points. It's always good to start with a win.'

Rytting Kaneryd's strike in the 36th minute saw her pick up from where she left off on the final day of last season and in pre-season, with the Swede now having scored four goals in her last five games in Chelsea blue.

'It was a wonderful strike, a wonderful shot' Bompastor said of the match-winning effort. 'Especially because we were talking with Jojo and trying to make her realise that she can sometimes come in and shoot with her left foot.

'She's been practicing that and I'm so happy because it worked tonight - it was a great shot and a great goal.

'It will give her more confidence for the other games, and the defenders it will make it harder for them because she is unpredictable. If she's able to go on the right or left foot, it is something really good for her and the team.'

Delighted with the three points, Bompastor admits it was a victory that had to be earned due to a solid display from our opponents, who were playing under new head coach Robert de Pauw for the first time in a competitive fixture.

'It's always important to start with a win,' she added. 'We were at home in Kingsmeadow with the fans and this will bring some good confidence to the players and to the team.

'Even if we know we can be better in parts of the game, we will analyse that and give some feedback to the girls.

'I think we need to give credit to Aston Villa and I knew that before the game because they were able to beat Manchester City [in pre-season] last weekend. They will make some trouble to other teams in the league.

'This is why the league is so competitive. The other teams are getting better and better. It's always good to have this win and to start with that.'

Bompastor believes there will be plenty more to come from her side, with the win highlighting the areas in which they had to adapt and where they can improve.

'We started well,' Bompastor said. 'I think sometimes with what we've been working on, we didn't recognise during the game where we should have played, but you have to take into account the scenario of the game, especially the second half because Aston Villa were trying to score and put a lot of pressure on us.

'When the opposition is putting you under pressure, you have to be able to find maybe a more direct style of play beyond their backline. That's the way it works sometimes because if you keep playing short when the opposition is pressing you, it is sometimes difficult.

'Being smart and trying to find a different style is also important when you want to win the game.'
