Sonia Bompastor was delighted with the way her players responded to not only the midweek setback against Manchester City, but also going behind at the Etihad today. The head coach watched on as we produced a thrilling second-half showing to return to winning ways and seize the momentum ahead of Thursday’s Champions League decider at Stamford Bridge.
A goal from the lively Kerolin Nicoli put City ahead on the half-hour. That lead would have been doubled before the break had the referee waited before whistling for a foul, a slice of fortune Bompastor admitted afterwards went our way.
But whatever the deficit we went back into the changing rooms with, she felt confident we could turn it around. So it proved, as goals from Aggie Beever-Jones at the start of the half and sub Erin Cuthbert right at the end of it earned a fantastic three points.
‘I’m really pleased with the result,’ said Bompastor at the start of her post-match analysis.
‘It was a really important three points, really important for us to stay at the top of the league and to keep the lead by eight points from Arsenal.
‘We started well the first 15 minutes. After we were not consistent enough, but I just reminded my players [at half-time] what the game plan was. I wanted them to be able to execute the game plan. I also told them I wanted to see more belief going into the second half.
‘We created a lot in the second half, 24 shots I think on goal, their keeper made really great saves. We could have maybe scored more, but two was enough to win the game.
‘Maybe in the second half something was different because I was able to bring some fresh legs into the game, and the quality of the players who came in made an impact on the result,’ added Bompastor.
‘This is what you expect from your players when they have this talent, this quality, but also this experience.’
The character her team displayed in adversity was an undoubted highlight of the afternoon for Bompastor. Setbacks have been few and far between this season, but Chelsea stood firm when the tide was threatening to turn against us to register a priceless three points.
'It's always important to react after losing a game,' noted Bompastor. 'Sometimes you think because we are Chelsea, it's easy to do that, but it's never easy for the players.
‘Coming and having to play City away again away, it’s a really good result for us and for the players. Showing this reaction was the best thing we could have done.
‘It was a champions’ performance. As I said, it's three really important points in the run for the title. We have 15 points left until the end and we are eight points ahead. It’s a big advantage but in football, you never know what can happen. Nobody will give us the title easily. We will need to fight until the end, and we are ready for that.’
