Sonia Bompastor was pleased to get the job done as her Chelsea side started their FA Cup campaign with a 4-0 win over Charlton Athletic in the fourth round, while our head coach also reflected on the return of Lauren James and the depth of her squad.
The Blues kicked off our FA Cup campaign in convincing fashion with a comfortable win over Championship opposition. Although it took 40 minutes for the opener to arrive through Mayra Ramirez, the victory never looked in doubt with Guro Reiten, Aggie Beever-Jones and Niamh Charles also getting themselves on the scoresheet.
A win in the FA Cup means our unbeaten run now stands at 17 matches, with Bompastor's side yet to taste defeat this season across three competitions.
Following our first match after winter break, Bompastor reflected in her post-match conference: 'I was not concerned [it took 40 minutes to score] because I was expecting us not to be able to score from the beginning against these types of teams.
'The biggest difference in these games is if you can make a big difference from the beginning of the game. But, sometimes you need to stay patient, you need to stay confident and trust yourself in that even if we don't score in the first opportunities then we can create more and score.'
Two of Chelsea's goal scorers against Charlton found the back of the net after coming off the bench. It took Beever-Jones - who was making her 50th appearance - just three minutes to score our third before Charles added a fourth in the 73rd minute.
Bompastor added: 'I'm pleased because I have depth in my squad and that's always important to make sure I rotate for them to stay confident.
'When they come in and they are able to make an impact, that's good for them individually and their own confidence, but also for the team because it shows me now we'll have a bit of a headache in making some choices for the future.'
Lauren James made her return to the starting XI for the first time since mid-October, playing 45 minutes before being one of three half-time substitutes, with Sandy Baltimore and Catarina Macario also leaving the pitch at half-time.
Our head coach reflected on those changes, as she said: 'Before the game, I always have multiple plans - plan A, B and C - depending on how the game goes.
'Today was good because we could win and we could also rotate the squad. Most of the players deserve to play in this game. You can only start 11 and only substitute five, sometimes it's difficult because I still have players who didn't play.
'It's good when you can rotate and give minutes to everyone.'
Despite the win, the match ended on a damp note as teenage midfielder Wieke Kaptein had to leave the field on a stretcher due to injury in added time.
Bompastor said: 'As you saw, she went on the ground and was pulled by the player. It's too soon to have some news. She felt some pain on her back. She will be assessed by the medical team tomorrow, and we'll have more information later in the week.'
