For Sonia Bompastor, there is no secret recipe for picking up three points. Put simply, the Chelsea head coach believes a good performance should equate to a good result.

Speaking to the media ahead of our first away game of the Women’s Super League season at Crystal Palace, Bompastor detailed her priorities for tomorrow night’s clash.

The Blues make the short trip to Selhurst Park to face the newly-promoted Eagles – who are playing their first-ever WSL home match – with three points on the board.

Our first match of the season saw Bompastor’s side claim a 1-0 win against Aston Villa at Kingsmeadow, but it was a hard-fought three points which Chelsea had to earn.

And against Palace, our head coach hopes to see an improved display en route to a second consecutive league win.

‘Both as a coach and players, we want to have a good performance,’ Bompastor said. ‘When you have a good performance, you normally should get good results.

‘From last week, it was really important to have a win and get the three points. We are still at the beginning of the season, so we need to work on our chemistry as a team.

‘In terms of performance, we have reviewed the game and have had some comments together with the team to make sure that we improve.

‘For tomorrow, we feel ready again. The priority for us is to get a good performance, and if the performance is good then the results should be with the performance.’

Although clear on her ambitions, Bompastor kept her cards close to her chest when asked what improvements she is hoping to see when we face Palace.

‘I want us to be able to manage the tempo better in the game,’ she added. ‘That should be one of our main focuses and some others, but I won’t say any more because the best way to prepare is just to keep some instructions for us and focus on ourselves.’

If her side are to claim the three points then a good performance will certainly be needed, insists Bompastor, who was left impressed by Crystal Palace despite their opening 4-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Eagles will be without Lexi Potter and Brooke Aspin for tomorrow’s contest, with the two Chelsea loanees unavailable to play against their parent club.

‘Every game we want to win,’ Bompastor said. ‘We have to focus on ourselves. I want to give credit to Laura [Kaminski] and the job that she has done with Crystal Palace last season. They are now in the first division.

‘This league is so competitive. I watched the game they had against Tottenham and I think the result was severe and didn’t reflect the game they had.

‘We are ready to face an opponent who will be playing the first game at home. They will be ready to compete and make the job really hard for us.’

In only her second WSL match as Chelsea head coach, Bompastor will lead her side in a maiden competitive London derby. Yet she has already had a taste of what is to come having played Arsenal during our pre-season tour of the USA.

‘I’m so excited to be in this kind of environment,’ Bompastor said. ‘As players and as a manager, we just want to be in the games where you have competition and you’re in an environment with the fans.

‘It brings you some motivation and positive pressure. We just want to have a good performance. We know we are going to play in a nice stadium with a nice atmosphere.

‘We just need to focus on ourselves, have a good performance, and make sure the performance brings a good result. That’s the best way to enjoy the whole kind of environment around the team.

‘I think I will have the opportunity to play a lot more derbies here than I was in France. This is something I really like because it brings a special atmosphere and it brings you special motivation.’

In her press conference, Bompastor was asked about the leadership qualities of summer signing Lucy Bronze. She hailed the experience the England international brings to the Blues but insists she has a team full of players who lead by example.

‘It’s very clear Millie [Bright] is the captain, but you have to have a lot of experienced players in the squad,’ Bompastor said. ‘Lucy’s experience is so important for the team.

‘Some other players have this experience and they can bring this to the team. From what we’re trying to work on, Lucy is a player with a lot of experience and she can help the others on the pitch, but I also expect that from others on the pitch.

‘The goalkeeper position is really important, there's Kadeisha Buchanan – I could go through the whole squad – and in midfield, there is Sio [Nusken] and Erin Cuthbert who can bring this experience to the team.

‘It’s always trying to find a good balance between the instructions and giving them to the team before the game, and the leadership they have to take in the game because the players are the ones playing the game.’
