Sonia Bompastor has confirmed that Naomi Girma is fit enough to start against Crystal Palace tomorrow evening, if selected, while also revealing that fellow centre-back Nathalie Bjorn will be rested for the WSL clash.

The Blues return to action on Wednesday evening when we face Palace at Kingsmeadow, looking to extend our lead at the top of the Women's Super League to six points by winning our game in hand.

Bompastor was asked to provide a fitness update during her pre-match press conference at Cobham on Tuesday afternoon, in front of the gathered media.

She said: ‘There are no fresh injuries. Nathalie Bjorn will be managed for the game tomorrow so she will be the only [new] player not available.

‘Apart from that, there are no returns and [it will be] the same squad that we had this weekend.’

USA international Girma made her return to action as a late substitute during Sunday's 4-1 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final first leg.

And Bompastor added: ‘I don’t think Naomi will be able to play 90 minutes but she is fit enough to start the game.’

The Blues head coach stressed that the squad's full focus will be on Wednesday's WSL clash with Palace, even with the tough task of overcoming a 4-1 deficit lying in wait for Sunday's Champions League second leg.

With the Women's League Cup already in the bag, Chelsea are still in the hunt for three competitions this season, with a Women's FA Cup final against Manchester United also to come on May 18.

Only three days separate the first leg against Barca and tomorrow's WSL clash with Palace and Bompastor suggested we could see changes to the starting line-up at Kingsmeadow.

She said: ‘I have said a lot of times this season that I have depth in my squad, so it will be important to show a reaction tomorrow with a competitive team but also to be ready as much as we can be ready for Sunday.

‘We have the depth in our squad to play in every competition and we will be ready to play tomorrow. We will go game-by-game, and we know we have some games left and we want to achieve a lot this season so there are three more competitions to play in and hopefully we will be playing until the last moment in the season. Everyone is ready for that.’

One player who will certainly miss the Palace and Barcelona matches is Lauren James.

Last week Chelsea confirmed that the England forward had suffered a hamstring injury, and will be out for 'a period of time'.

Bompastor was asked about James during her pre-Palace press conference, replying: ‘I think she will come back well from that injury. It just takes time.

'Hamstrings can sometimes be big injuries in women’s football but Lauren will be fine. It is difficult to put a timeline on it because everyone is different and in rehab I think everyone can react in a different way. But I am not concerned about LJ. It is just a matter of time.'

It was a similar story when Bompastor was asked about the return of Blues legend Sam Kerr, who has not featured since January 2024 following an ACL injury.

Bompastor again reiterated: ‘It is difficult for me to say because everyone is different and everyone reacts differently. Sam is progressing in her rehab but I don’t have enough elements to say if we will see her this season. Hopefully yes but it is difficult for me to say.'

Tickets are still available for our second leg against Barcelona at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and you can secure your seat now. We need your support more than ever as we look to mount another Champions League comeback!
