Nathalie Bjorn missed Chelsea’s defeat to Barcelona at Stamford Bridge, but Sonia Bompastor is hopeful of having the centre-back available for Wednesday’s trip to Manchester United.
Bjorn came off late on during the first leg of our Champions League semi-final tie, and subsequently sat out the midweek victory over Crystal Palace. Having made a late call to leave the Swedish defender out of her squad yesterday, Bompastor provided the latest update, with the game against Man United on Wednesday night in mind.
'She felt uncomfortable around her calf and Achilles,’ said Bompastor.
‘There is no injury [now] so we tried to have her for this game but she was a bit short [of being able to play]. She could potentially be in the squad for Man United.
‘It was a difficult one. We knew the game was important, but also the one coming up on Wednesday was as important. She wasn’t ready to be fit enough to compete in the squad and start the game, so hopefully she will be ready for Wednesday.’
During the Barca game, Sam Kerr was once again cheering her team-mates on from the sidelines, and joined them on the pitch afterwards to thank the Blues fans for their fantastic support. Not for the first time, Bompastor was asked if we might see the striker play again this season.
‘It’s difficult to put a timeframe on her return,’ Bompastor replied.
‘She is working really hard. All the performance staff are doing everything for her to play this season. We will see how it goes. We only have a few games left now, so hopefully yes, but it’s difficult for me to have a clear answer.’
