Sonia Bompastor says she and her Chelsea players are fully focused on tomorrow's Women's Super League clash against Manchester City after processing the disappointment of our midweek Champions League defeat to Nick Cushing's side.
City recorded a 2-0 victory in the first leg of our quarter-final tie on Wednesday evening. It was the first time the Blues have been beaten under Bompastor and has left us with plenty to do in the second leg, which takes place next Thursday at Stamford Bridge.
Yet before that game, we travel back up to Manchester to take on City in the WSL. And Bompastor is ready to go up against the Citizens once again.
She said: ’It's always tough to lose games, but even if it’s rare, it's part of the job. Sometimes, even if you have the best preparation and give your all on the pitch, it doesn’t work the way you want.
'I have my own process [to get over a defeat] and of course, one day after the game it’s tough because you have your emotions and it’s always difficult to lose games.
'I am someone who is really positive and I need to bring this positive energy to my team and to my squad, so it’s ok for everyone, players and staff included to have a tough day after a loss.
'Our job is now to make sure we focus on the future as we can’t control the past. Having a good reflection of the game is something positive. We had that as a team on Friday morning and we are all now focused on the game on Sunday.’
Bompastor was also keen to accentuate the positives of the campaign thus far. We have already lifted the League Cup, sit eight points clear atop the Women's Super League table, and will face Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final next month.
There is also the opportunity to overturn the deficit against City when they visit Stamford Bridge next Thursday for the second leg of our Champions League tie.
'I always said that when we win it’s the players and when we lose it’s the manager,' said Bompastor. 'I always take that responsibility because I don’t want the players to feel a lot of pressure on them, so I think it's good to do that.
'I think the players have a lot of experience, they know what we could have done better in the game and the reflection was really constructive and positive.
'We are used to working together and they know what I expect of them. It’s good now to be focused on what we need to do to make sure we have a better result in Sunday’s game.'
Our trip to the Etihad Stadium is the third of four consecutive fixtures against City. Our first ended in the Blues lifting the League Cup and the second came on Wednesday evening.
Bompastor highlighted what she believed were the differences between the two performances and discussed how we can approach our next encounter with City.
‘I think in the first game, maybe we couldn’t control the game in the way we wanted to but at least we won the game,' she said. 'I think we were the better team in possession of the ball in the second game, but it didn’t work because we lost the game.
'So maybe it’s finding the right balance between having more ball possession and being able to control the game. Sometimes, being on top of City but also being efficient, clinical and scoring more goals because we couldn’t score in the game on Wednesday.'
Tickets are still available for our Champions League quarter final second leg tie with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge. You can book your tickets for this must-see game on Thursday 27 March here.
