Sunday’s dramatic late win against Newcastle United stretched our unbeaten record in home Premier League matches in March to 35 matches since 2001.
With no other home league games scheduled this month, our impressive run of 30 wins and five draws will stretch to 22 years by the time we play again in March next year.
Here’s a look at how the Blues have established this mark at Stamford Bridge in the third month of the year over the past two decades.
2001 – 2-1 v Middlesbrough
Chelsea last suffered a home league defeat in March in 2001 when Sunderland came from 2-1 down at half-time to win 4-2. However, we bounced back later that month against another northeast side as Eidur Gudjohnsen bagged the winner in our 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough.
2002 – 3-2 v Fulham, 4-0 v Tottenham Hotspur, 4-0 v Sunderland, 2-1 v Derby County
The Blues were on a great run of home form in March 2002 when we won all four of our league games at the Bridge including a 4-0 win over Tottenham courtesy of a brilliant hat-trick by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.
2003 – 5-0 v Manchester City2004 – 2-1 v Fulham, 5-2 v Wolverhampton Wanderers
After a 5-0 thumping of Manchester City in 2003, Chelsea netted five again the following season when Hasselbaink celebrated his 32nd birthday in style by coming on as a substitute and netting a hat-trick as we came from behind to trounce Wolves 5-2.
2005 – 1-0 v West Bromwich Albion, 4-1 v Crystal Palace2006 – 2-1 v Tottenham Hotspur, 2-0 v Manchester City
The Blues won all of our March home games in 2004/05 and 2005/06 as we secured back-to-back Premier League titles. A Mateja Kezman brace helped us cruise to a 4-1 win over Crystal Palace in 2005 while William Gallas’ stunning stoppage-time strike saw off Spurs a year later
2007 – 3-0 v Sheffield United 2008 – 6-1 v Derby County, 2-1 v Arsenal, 1-0 v Middlesbrough2009 – 1-0 v Manchester City 2010 – 4-1 v West Ham United, 7-1 v Aston Villa
Chelsea became the first team to score 100 goals in a Premier League season in 2009/10 with 11 coming in our home games in March when we trounced relegation-threatened West Ham 4-1 and fired seven past Aston Villa in a statement win as we went on to clinch the Double.
2011 – 2-1 v Manchester United, 2-0 v Manchester City2012 – 1-0 v Stoke City, 0-0 v Tottenham Hotspur
The Blues completed a home double against the Manchester clubs in 2011 with Ramires netting the club’s Goal of the Season against City. However, our run of 22 straight home league wins in March came to an end a year later when Spurs frustrated us in a goalless draw,
2013 – 1-0 v West Bromwich Albion, 2-0 v West Ham United2014 – 4-0 v Tottenham Hotspur, 6-0 v Arsenal
Chelsea emphasised our position as the best team in London by netting 10 unanswered goals against two of our capital rivals in March 2014. After netting four second-half goals to sink Spurs, the Blues ruined Arsene Wenger’s 1000th Premier League game by recording our biggest ever win over the Gunners.
2015 – 1-1 v Southampton 2016 – 1-1 v Stoke City, 2-2 v West Ham United 2018 – 2-1 v Crystal Palace 2019 – 1-1 v Wolverhampton Wanderers
After winning 27 of 28 games in March from 2001 to 2014, the Blues drew four of five games from 2015 to 2019. However, we preserved our unbeaten run thanks to dramatic late equalisers by Cesc Fabregas against West Ham in 2016 and Eden Hazard against Wolves in 2019.
2020 – 4-0 v Everton 2021 – 2-0 v Everton 2022 – 1-0 v Newcastle United
Prior to last weekend’s win against Newcastle, our previous two March league games were against Everton. The earlier match in 2020 was notable as goals by Mason Mount, Pedro, Willian and Olivier Giroud gave Chelsea fans plenty to enjoy in our final game before the league was abruptly halted for three months because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
