With one week to go until a host of former Blues stars gather to play once more at Stamford Bridge, two more names taking part are announced today.
At half-time of today's game against Nottingham Forest, Gary Cahill was unveiled at the stadium as one of the additions to the squad to take on a team of Bayern Munich legends, and Jody Morris’s participation can also now be confirmed.
The significance of Cahill taking to the pitch in next Saturday's game needs little explanation. The big centre-back memorably won a race to be fit for the 2012 Champions League final against Bayern and so lifted the cup just a few months after joining Chelsea, a trophy haul he went on to increase massively in the seasons that followed.
The Legends of Europe game is in part a celebration of the Munich triumph with many others from that campaign already signed up to play again under Roberto Di Matteo’s management, and it is also being played in tribute to Gianluca Vialli.
When Luca arrived in London in 1996, he found among his team-mates a teenage midfield protégé with Morris on the back of his shirt, and it was a young talent the Italian would go on to nurture when he became Blues manager. They too enjoyed successful cup campaigns together.
Now Jody joins others from across the Chelsea generations including John Terry, Gianfranco Zola, Michael Essien, Claude Makelele, Carlo Cudicini, Tore Andre Flo, Frank Leboeuf, Salomon Kalou, Florent Malouda, Eidur Gudjohnsen, William Gallas, Tiago, Ramires, John Mikel Obi, Hilaro, Frank Sinclair, Pierluigi Casiraghi, Jon Harley, Sam Dalla Bona and Danny Granville.
Many tickets have been sold but general admission seats and Club Chelsea packages can be still be purchased for the game on Saturday 9 September, kick-off 7.15pm.
All proceeds from the game will be split between The Chelsea Foundation and The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity which supports the work of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, where Luca Vialli was treated.
