Raheem Sterling was pleased to play his part in our winning goal against Fulham and believes our home form is giving us a platform to build from.
Chelsea triumphed 1-0 against Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday to make it three wins in a row in the Premier League, and four on the bounce on home soil in that competition.
The victory was secured via a Cole Palmer penalty in added time at the end of the first half, when Raheem Sterling was tripped in the box by Issa Diop as he jinked his way into a dangerous shooting position after being found with a brilliant reverse pass from Palmer.
‘I was just happy to contribute in that way so that we could get the penalty,’ said Sterling.
‘It’s about quick feet and sharp turns, sometimes defenders dangle legs out and that’s what he did there. I was happy because sometimes I haven’t been given some that were clear, but I’m glad that the ref gave that one yesterday.
‘Cole dispatched it brilliantly and we got the three points. He gets in positions really well and he can see that final pass into the box, that was a great pass.’
However, it wasn’t straight forward to get over the finish line after taking our lead on the stroke of half-time, as the Blues had to weather some late pressure from the visitors to secure another important three points.
‘That’s why the Premier League’s the number one league in the world. If you don’t put teams to bed, at 1-0 with 10 minutes to go, every team in the league will push you and we had to try and get that decisive goal.
‘We didn’t and then they tried to push us, but we got that three points in the end.’
Sterling also believes the improvement in our league form in recent weeks is a sign of the progress being made. Although he knows there is still a long way to go before the Blues hit the high standards we are aiming for, confidence is growing with every win.
‘It’s always been a work in progress, nothing was going to be overnight,’ Sterling continued. ‘We have a gaffer here who’s setting principles, discipline within the group. There’s certain little things, like today getting another three points.
‘It can look nervy at times but the more you win the more confidence the group has, the more the fans are behind you and you can relax and see the football come out a bit better.
‘That’s what it takes, we just need to keep winning, keep building that momentum and little by little you can see the improvement.
‘That’s what we know the fans deserve and that’s what we need to keep doing, keep building on these things and keep trying to win. We know what we need to do, keep working and keep winning games. That’s what’s expected at a football club like Chelsea.
‘It’s another step in the right direction and another three points that we can build on. We’ve got the fans behind us here and that gives us the belief.’
