Young defender Olutayo Subuloye has reflected on the recent October international break, when he travelled to Marbella to join Liam Bramley's England Under-18s squad for the first time in his career.

It was a memorable week for the Chelsea Under-18s player, as Subuloye earned his first call-up to represent his country during a four-team friendly tournament in Spain.

The defender was named in the Young Lions' starting XI for the semi-final against Sweden, alongside fellow Blues Frankie Runham and Ollie Harrison, and was among the substitutes for the closing fixture against Ukraine, when the side picked up a 3-1 win.

'The experience was incredible,' Subuloye said. 'The trip gave me an insight into a future where I hope to continue making memories.

'One of my favorite parts was the training sessions. Being surrounded by the best players in my age group allowed me to learn and continue my development.

'Some of the players had also been involved with their senior teams, so it was a great opportunity to learn from them and hear about their experiences. Overall it was an amazing period and I hope I can keep being part of it.'

The 16-year-old also shared how he reacted to the news of the call-up from Bramley, along with his family's response to a moment they will never forget.

'I remember when the call came, it was such a special moment. My mum was so happy for me and my dad almost cried, he was so proud. They always believed in me and it was great to see the moment actually happen.

'Recently, I’ve felt my performances have been solid. I’ve been working hard in training and matches with Chelsea, so to see my efforts recognised by England, it was surreal.'

Chelsea Academy have a long history of supplying players for international duty. In the last October international break there were 16 players from across our Under-18s and Under-21s squads called up to represent their country, encompassing England, the Republic of Ireland, Finland, Sweden, Portugal and Morocco.

'I was nervous before arriving, but the support around me was top. The support from the staff at the camp was definitely there from the coaches to player care staff, who made sure I felt comfortable from my arrival.

'In the Under-18s I had some of my Chelsea team-mates Ollie [Harrison] and Frankie [Runham] there, that made things easier.

'Obviously it's nice having the boys who I am with every day with me, but meeting new faces and getting to know the players who have been involved in the camps before, they also made me feel welcome. I felt a part of the team straight away.'

Wearing the England shirt for the first time, Subuloye was determined to make a strong impression during the Marbella tournament, even though he felt there were some obstacles along the way.

'There were so many positives and I feel like I gained valuable experiences and learned a lot about myself, both as a player and a person.

'However, there were challenges. You’re surrounded by the best players in the country’s age group and everyone is outstanding, so you have to show why you deserve to be picked. There are demands, but it makes you push yourself even further to be the best you can be.

'The same can be said for the opponents we faced. They were strong, physically and mentally, but I think we handled it well, both individually and as a team.

'The main thing I took away from the trip is the importance of being confident in myself and my decision-making. I learned that I was called up for a reason, and I need to trust in that.'

Chelsea are set to face Southampton away in Under-18 Premier League action at 11am this Saturday. After missing out on the three points against Reading at Cobham last time out, the team is ready to make a comeback in our next challenge.

'I'm feeling good. I feel like I’m in good form and taking care of my body, allowing it to rest and recover so I can perform at my best.

'I’ll take everything I’ve learned from the international break into these next games and, hopefully, more international duties will follow.'
