Everyone at Chelsea Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Blue, Terry Venables, aged 80.
A true leader, a great talent and one of the most charismatic players ever to represent the Blues, he will be missed by all at Stamford Bridge.
Venables was part of a golden generation of young players who came through the Chelsea youth system in the late Fifties before forming the core of Tommy Docherty’s exciting and innovative ‘Diamonds’ side of the Sixties.
The midfielder became the much-loved and respected leader of that group, equally popular in the dressing room and the stands at Stamford Bridge. He played a key role in the club’s return to the top flight in 1963 and on into the upper reaches of the division, as well as lifting the League Cup as captain in 1965.
In total, Venables made 237 senior appearances for Chelsea between 1959 and 1966, scoring 31 goals.
The thoughts and condolences of everyone at the Club are with his family and friends at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Terry.
