We take a look at the numbers to come out of yesterday’s defeat to Bayern Munich, with Mateo Kovacic’s display a shining light…

The main positive from a Chelsea perspective last night was the performance of Kovacic, as highlighted by Frank Lampard after the game, and the stats show where the Croatian excelled.

He was successful with eight dribbles out of nine, a game-high figure, and his five tackles won (with a 100 per cent success rate) was a figure bettered by nobody on the pitch.

Of the Chelsea players he completed the second-most passes (47) with the second-best completion rate (89 per cent), and had the most touches (76). Only Jorginho (5.5 per cent) spent more time on the ball than him (4.7 per cent), while Kovacic’s two key passes was a joint-high figure for Chelsea players (along with Mason Mount).

He and Marcos Alonso were the only outfield Chelsea players not to be dribbled past by an opposition player.

Overall, Bayern’s dominance is reflected by the fact they had more shots (16 to our nine), more possession (63.2 per cent) and a superior pass completion rate (88 per cent to 80 per cent).

Bayern have now scored 3 or more goals away from home at four separate English clubs in the Champions League - Arsenal (twice), Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea - with each instance coming since 2013.

Mount had five attempts, a game-high figure, but just one was on target.

David Alaba completed the most passes (95), with Thomas Muller registering five key passes.

Olivier Giroud won three aerial duels, a figure bettered only by Robert Lewandowski who won four. As a team we won 43 per cent of the 30 such duels contested.

Andreas Christensen and Toni Rudiger recorded six interceptions apiece.

The 3-0 loss was our biggest margin of defeat in a home European game.
