Chelsea recorded a third win in seven days at Leicester City on Saturday as we scored three goals for the first time since early October and here we analyse the standout performers…
The Blues scored three excellent goals at the King Power Stadium, with Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz and finally Mateo Kovacic all scoring volleys to clinch us the three points and continue our good run of form.
Graham Potter’s side certainly found our shooting boots: scoring as many goals against the Foxes yesterday [3] as we scored in all competitions throughout all of January. Here, we analyse how that came about in the East Midlands.
Clinical in front of goal
It has been widely shared that the Blues have not been good enough in front of goal in 2023, but we were clinical and scored some excellent goals in Leicester, further proving just how fine the margins are in football.
Indeed, Leicester tested Kepa seven times yesterday, compared to Danny Ward's six saves. However half of our strikes on target hit the back of the net, emphasising the sheer quality in our goals.
King Kai clinical again
Havertz has looked incredibly dangerous across our past three games, leading the line in all of them.
His latest goal was a moment of class, in comparison to the moment of coolness he had to show in midweek when despatching the winning penalty.
His stats prove he was a threat all afternoon against Brendan Rodgers's side, as he netted his eighth goal of the season, and sixth in the league. He is the top scorer under Graham Potter, and after covering the most distance in Tuesday's win, Havertz is proving he is becoming very hard to drop.
Enzo feeling at home
No player had more touches [93] or more passes attempted [77] than Enzo Fernandez at the King Power, and only Marc Cucurella [7] registered more successful tackles than the Argentina, who made four.
He now has two assists for his new club, both coming in our gold third shirt. Both have been exquisite bits of skill, and he has been showcasing his quality in recent weeks in the engine room.
Aggressive Cucu
Cucurella was outstanding once again on the left of a back-three, registering seven tackles, the most he has made for Chelsea since joining in the summer and the most since he registered six at Anfield in January.
His stats above prove he has adopted a more aggressive approach in the last two games, perhaps signalling to his intent to cement his place in the side in the absence of Thiago Silva at the back.
Despite not being in our matchday squad the three games prior to Dortmund, the Spaniard has shone since being reintegrated, highlighting exactly what Chelsea saw in the left-footed defender when signing him from fellow Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion.
Mudryk’s first assist
Mykhailo Mudryk did incredibly well to set up captain Mateo Kovacic for our third and final goal. After Havertz’s lofted pass, Mykhailo nodded the ball back across goal despite being off balance, and in doing so assisted Kovacic to record his first goal involvement for the Blues.
On a day where the Blues made it 10 wins from 14 visits to Leicester in all competitions, there were many players who rose to the task and put on a proper Chelsea performance.
