The smile on Tosin Adarabioyo’s face beams when he’s asked to describe his two goals against Morecambe. When he labels the second one as ‘an amazing strike’, the smile erupts into infectious laughter.
But who can blame the defender? Known more for keeping the ball out rather than putting it in the net, to score twice in one game – both flying efforts from distance – you can forgive him for praising up his goals when describing them post-match.
In fact, for the summer signing from Fulham, you could argue it was the perfect day for him – a Chelsea victory, a pair of goals and a clean sheet – as we returned to winning ways in style against Morecambe in the FA Cup.
That’s something that Tosin agreed with when he reflected on the victory after the game and explaining why it was important to get back to winning ways ahead of a tricky clash with Bournemouth in the Premier League on Tuesday evening.
‘It was a great win for us and it couldn’t have gone much better really,’ our No.4 stated post-match.
‘To win 5-0, to score two goals personally and to keep a clean sheet, it’s just perfect and we’re really pleased to get through to the next round.
‘The FA Cup is a special competition and there’s a trophy up for grabs at the end of it. It’s something we aspire to and we want to go all the way in, like we do every competition we enter.
‘Being back at Stamford Bridge, it was important we got back to winning ways in front of our fans and we managed to do that. Now, we have to look forward to Tuesday’s game against Bournemouth and trying to build on this performance.’
Now, let’s talk about those goals. Two thunderous strikes from Tosin, albeit one helped by a slight deflection, helped the Blues see off the Shrimps 5-0 with a strike from Christopher Nkunku and a further brace from Joao Felix ensuring the win.
Tosin’s second strike, a stunner from range, was the pick of the bunch and the defender even jokingly [we think!] suggested he was after a hat-trick to cap off the victory.
‘I was delighted with my goals and I actually wanted to get a third!’ Tosin stated, with a smile.
‘Unfortunately I couldn’t get into the position again to strike at goal but as I said, really happy to get on the scoresheet.
‘I got a bit lucky with the first one as it took a deflection but it was still a decent strike and the second one, was an amazing strike if I do say so myself!
‘But no, in all seriousness, I’m just delighted to score and to help the team record a solid victory. I want to score my goals and my brothers are always onto me to shoot more, so hopefully that will keep them happy for a little while!’
