Four hundred students from schools across Surrey and Kingston participated in Chelsea Foundation’s Road to Cobham regional tournament as part of the Premier League Primary Stars programme.
Twenty-six mixed teams and 24 girls-only teams competed in two separate tournaments. The top four teams progressed to the Road to Cobham final tournament at our Cobham training ground.
Latchmere, Cheam Park Farm, Ellingham and Cleves School progressed from the mixed tournament, while Corpus Christi, Latchmere, St Michaels and Cheam Park Farm Schools qualified from the girls tournament. The winners of the two Road to Cobham tournaments will represent Chelsea Foundation nationally in May at the Premier League Primary Stars Finals.
To encourage students to think beyond playing football, prior to the tournaments each participating school was asked to complete a creative task. The task was a different way for students to reflect on their journey, express their team spirit, and demonstrate their understanding of the values of the Premier League Primary Stars programme.
The values are:
Be ambitious - work hard and never give up on your goals
Be inspiring - set a great example to others.
Be connected - work well with others and in a team.
Be fair - treat people equally and think of others.
The winners of the task were Coombe Hill School and St Polycarps School, whose submissions were creative, reflected the values to their journeys, and expressed their strong team bonds beyond the tournament.
As an added bonus for winning the pre-tournament task, Coombe Hill and St Polycarps were invited to attend a special stadium tour of Stamford Bridge.
A teacher from a participating school said: ‘We loved competing in the pre-tournament task as it got us excited for the tournament and the girls were able to understand our values and how these relate to the schools.
Sam Mardle, Chelsea FC Foundation schools education manager, said: ‘This year we wanted to get our schools thinking deeper about the core values of the programme. We were delighted with the engagement and work on the task. Congratulations to the winners and well done to everyone who participated.’
Premier League Primary Stars is the Premier League’s primary school education programme. Funded by the Premier League through the Premier League Charitable Fund, the programme uses the appeal of football to help children be active and develop essential life skills.
