Tyrique George says he and his Chelsea team-mates had to 'dig deep' in the Danish capital to secure a 2-1 victory over Copenhagen in our Conference League last-16 first leg.
After a tough opening 45 minutes of football in the Danish capital, the Blues clicked into gear as captain Reece James broke the deadlock with a 25-yard strike in front of the travelling Chelsea supporters.
Enzo Fernandez doubled our advantage later in the second period after George had played a sweet pass to the Argentine midfielder. And despite a late consolation goal for the hosts, we secured the win.
Speaking after the contest, George explained the importance of remaining patient in the face of tricky opposition and a hostile atmosphere.
‘It was a tough game to be fair,’ the 19-year-old explained. ‘They are a good team so we had to dig deep. It was all about staying positive, especially in the first half. We knew they were a good team, but we knew eventually we would get our chances.’
On the atmosphere, George continued: ‘It was quite surreal at the start but once you’re in the game, you just block it out.’
It was George’s quick thinking that helped the Blues grab a second goal, and the Academy graduate was pleased to help in what proved to be the decisive goal of the contest.
‘It was a good goal,’ he said. ‘I just saw Enzo on the edge of the box, so I gave it to him and it was great to help the team.
'It was about digging deep today. It’s been a good experience trying to get as many minutes as possible.’
