Having climbed the ladder at Cobham from starting at Under-8s, Tyrique George was thrilled to make his first start for the senior men’s team during our 8-0 victory over Noah.
The long road of youth development led to this opportunity for the 18-year-old. Having made the matchday squad on a few occasions last season, and eventually earning his debut against Servette in August coming on from the bench, head coach Enzo Maresca handed George his first start last night.
Linking up with his team-mates and causing the opposition problems down the right flank, the Cobham graduate was equally proud and grateful having put on a good show for the supporters in attendance in an important Conference League tie.
‘It was a great game and I really, really enjoyed it,’ George opened. ‘To start for Chelsea, my boyhood club, was a great feeling.
‘I knew I was starting a few hours before. Enzo [Maresca] was going through the line-up and said my name. I was just excited and couldn’t wait to make a good impression for the fans and for the manager.
‘There were a few nerves, of course, but the excitement goes above the nerves and I was just excited to get on the pitch and show what I could do.’
Pleased with his on-pitch efforts, Tyrique enjoyed linking up with the likes of Christopher Nkunku down the channels.
‘I was full of confidence really,’ he added. ‘Christo and I had a good relationship down the right-hand side, so I really enjoyed it.
‘It doesn’t take long [to build relationships on the pitch]. They are quality players so when you play with them it’s easy.’
