The goals flowed in north London on Saturday morning as our youngsters smashed seven past Spurs in the Under-18 Premier League.
It was an even opening quarter of an hour at Tottenham’s training centre in Enfield, with Ed Brand’s boys looking to build on their promising opening-day victory over West Brom. The deadlock was finally broken after 19 minutes as Brodi Hughes advanced with purpose from right-back and fed a nice pass left for Ronnie Stutter.
The striker, who netted a brace against the Baggies last weekend, took a few touches to compose himself, cut inside the nearest defender and produced a perfect finish into the far corner beyond the despairing dive of Spurs keeper Adam Hayton.
Jimi Tauriainen and Lewis Hall both tested Hayton before our lead was eventually doubled from the penalty spot after the referee deemed that Edwin Andersson’s burst into the box from the left had been halted illegally. Hall made no mistake from 12 yards, dispatching the spot-kick high into the roof of the net for 2-0.
Yet Spurs soon had a penalty of their own after a clumsy challenge from Billy Gee brought down Jamie Donley in the Blues box. Teddy Curd did his best to distract the Tottenham striker but was helpless to stop the ball being drilled precisely into the bottom corner as the hosts reduced the deficit seven minutes before the break.
A five-minute salvo after the restart put paid to any hopes of a Spurs comeback as the Blues hit two quickfire goals. Richard Olise and Andersson combined well down the left before the full-back fell under another clumsy challenge. Despite Tottenham’s protestations, Hall did his job once again with a tidy finish into the corner.
Stutter then turned provider, again advancing down the left before teeing up Tauriainen to convert from close range. Tottenham’s frustrations spilled over when Donley was dismissed on the hour mark for a crude challenge on Tauriainen but they did find a second goal with 10 men as substitute Roshaun Mathurin made an instant impact, driving forward and firing into the bottom corner.
However, the young Blues soon made their numerical advantage count and finished with a flourish. Malik Mothersille evaded the offside trap and the goalkeeper in making it 5-2 with his maiden youth team goal, before Derrick Abu hit a brilliant effort from distance and Andersson rounded things off with a rifled effort from a tight angle.
It left the visitors with a huge scoreline and another three points on the board as their excellent start to 2021/22 continues. Next up is a trip to Norwich City.
