December was an unusual month for club football as the FIFA World Cup took centre stage but there was still plenty of action, plus goals, for our women’s and Academy teams, not to mention a winning return to Premier League duty for the men’s side…
Emma Hayes’s table-topping Chelsea Women team took centre stage for those of a Chelsea persuasion in the final month of the calendar year with five matches played and 19 goals scored, four of which feature in the December goal vote.
Joining that quartet of strikes are efforts from youth team centre-forward Louis Flower and England’s returning World Cup midfielder Mason Mount. You can relive all the strikes by watching the video before placing your vote at the link below.
Guro Reiten vs Leicester City
The Norwegian kicked off our 8-0 Women’s Super League thrashing in the East Midlands with a tidy finish at the end of a slick team move.
Sophie Ingle and Fran Kirby provided some incisive passes in the build-up before Reiten steered a left-footed shot into the back of the net, before going on to add four assists to an incredible attacking display.
Sam Kerr vs PSG
Hayes’s side rounded off 2022 with a European victory at Stamford Bridge over Paris Saint-Germain, with Kerr opening the scoring as the Blues sealed top spot in their Champions League group.
Latching onto the loose ball after a mistake from a visiting defender, Kerr isolated another PSG player and drove towards goal before striking cleanly into the top corner from just outside the box.
Mason Mount vs Bournemouth
The Premier League return saw the Blues back at the Bridge with a comfortable victory over Bournemouth in which Mount doubled our lead midway through the first half.
England’s World Cup quarter-finalist hit a sumptuous strike that started outside the post and bent perfectly back into the bottom corner beyond the despairing dive of the Cherries goalkeeper, registering his seventh club goal involvement (three goals, four assists) of the campaign.
Sam Kerr vs Leicester City
Chelsea’s fifth at the King Power came courtesy of our leading finisher Kerr, who made it 5-0 before the half-time whistle had sounded.
Reiten turned provider for one of her four assists in the game, curling a perfect pass from the left wing into the path of our Australian forward, dissecting the Foxes defence in the process and putting it on a plate for Kerr to convert with a first-time finish.
Lauren James vs PSG
In front of a packed Shed End, James anticipated PSG’s build-up from the back and intercepted the goalkeeper’s pass out before combining clinically with Fran Kirby and Kerr.
On receiving Kerr’s first-time pass, the 21-year-old needed just the one touch of her own to fire the ball in from 10 yards out.
Louis Flower vs Aston Villa
Flower completed a 3-1 win for our youngsters in what proved to be the only game of the month for the Chelsea Under-18s.
Receiving a precise pass from Kiano Dyer down the inside-left channel, the striker advanced menacingly before cutting inside the defender and producing a cool side-footed finish to seal the points.
