Shaun Wade has returned to Cobham after attending our Academy pre-season training camp in Portugal, discussing the lessons he has learned and his hopes for the future after signing a new contract with Chelsea.

Shaun Wade - who joined the club at the end of his Under-14s season - is extremely pleased with how his pre-season experience has played out so far, having returned from Portugal with a new contract which will keep him at the club until at least 2027.

Wade is currently preparing for the upcoming campaign, with several friendly fixtures on the horizon. We spoke to the 17-year-old about his recent form, what it means to him to continue his time as a Blue and his favorite Chelsea memories...

Shaun, you are back from the Under-18s' pre-season training camp. How did it go in Portugal?

'Portugal was a great experience. Training was challenging as the weather was extremely hot, but it felt good to get out and continue to build on my fitness. We had an opportunity to play a fixture out there, which was a good chance to see how the new team gelled and get back into the competitive nature.

'It has prepared me for the season, and I need to remain focused for the rest of the preparations until the new campaign.'

During pre-season, what are the main aims you want to achieve to ensure you are ready for the season ahead?

'My main focus during pre-season is getting my fitness levels back to how they were at the end of last season, if not better.

'Another aim is to take the time to connect with the team, as that is another reason why pre-season is so important. It is a new and much younger squad this season, so having the opportunity in training and friendly fixtures to get to know how each other plays is crucial to prepare for the league ahead.'

How are you feeling about the upcoming season?

'Having done so well last season with winning the Under-18 Premier League southern title, it only makes us want to relive that moment. Lifting that trophy was my favourite memory so far at the club, one I will never forget. We all want to win trophies, that's why we’re at Chelsea.

'One of my goals this season is to win the FA Youth Cup. The club has a long history of lifting that silverware and having the experience to win such an impressive and competitive competition would be a great achievement.'

What is it like to work under Hassan Sulaiman?

'Hass is great – there’s no doubt about that. Not just as a coach, but as a person. He always takes the time to get to know each of his players on a deeper level, which shows he wants us to strive both on and off the pitch. He understands our strengths and always believes in us, which pushes us further. I can’t rate him enough, and we are all lucky to have a coach like him.'

You have signed a new three-year contract. What does extending your stay at Chelsea mean to you?

'I feel proud to extend my stay as it means a lot to me. It’s every boy's dream to sign for a club like Chelsea, and to continue my journey is a surreal moment. I almost can’t quite believe it!

'But with all the endless hours and sacrifices I have had to make to get here, it shows my love for the sport, and playing football every day is something I love doing.'

You’re journey as a Blue will now continue until at least 2027. What do you hope to accomplish in that time?

'I want to continue to develop and improve, which hopefully will see me progress into the Under-21s squad before following the pathway to the men’s team.

'Being at Chelsea, being surrounded by other Academy players who have stepped into the senior side, gives you even more ambition and drive.

'The pathway is so clear and having the men’s building always in eyeline – across the road – just shows how close the opportunities are and the possibilities of what could happen.

'I’m looking forward to continuing my hard work and doing what I love doing - playing football.'
