When speaking to Keira Walsh after a difficult evening in Barcelona, there was one overriding message from the midfielder – that this Champions League tie is far from over yet.
The Blues were defeated in the first leg of our Champions League semi-final with Barcelona, losing 4-1 in Spain against Walsh’s former side.
Sandy Baltimore did secure us a vital away goal but two late strikes from the hosts ensured they head to London with a healthier aggregate score than we would have liked.
Walsh, capped by England and a winter signing for Sonia Bompastor’s side, felt the Blues could have ‘managed’ the game better but was also quick to point out that in knockout football, anything can happen.
‘It was difficult for us and the second half became something of a different game for us, if we’re being totally honest,’ said Keira, in an honest assessment of the tie.
‘It’s a hard one to reflect on, perhaps we should have looked to shut up shop a bit more after our goal and looked to take the result back to Stamford Bridge as it was [2-1]. But we always look to take the game to our opponents and of course, it’s easy to say things in hindsight afterwards.
‘We were probably a little bit too open in the second half and credit to Barcelona, they punished us. But the tie isn’t over, they’ve still got to come to Stamford Bridge and we’re going to give it our all to turn things around.
‘It’s going to be tough to turn around a three-goal deficit, but we’ve done it before. We showed that against Manchester City, so we know we are capable of achieving this.’
The second leg takes place at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, 27 April at 2pm. Tickets remain on sale, so grab yours and support the side as we look to stage an incredible comeback.
Walsh was quick to point out how strong the support from the fans has been all season and hopes to be celebrating with our supporters come Sunday teatime.
‘We’ll head back to London now, get in at Cobham to recover and be ready to work again,’ added the midfielder.
‘We won’t be giving up on this tie, that’s for sure and we want to put things right at Stamford Bridge.
‘I’m sure we’ll have great support behind us again and we know that the fans can play a massive role. Wherever we are at Stamford Bridge, Kingsmeadow or away from home, the fans are always right behind us and I want them to know that it doesn’t go unnoticed.
‘Hopefully they can help drive us forward once again in the second leg and we can turn this tie around.’
