Blues legend Sophie Ingle delved into her two spells with the club as the latest player in focus on our We Are Chelsea podcast.
The Wales international joined host Caz De Moraes for an episode in which our midfielder gave insight into her life as a Blue.
Ingle first joined Chelsea in 2012, under then manager Matt Beard, before making nine league appearances the following season, which was Emma Hayes’s first full campaign in charge.
She would join Bristol City – then called Bristol Academy – in 2014 before moving to Liverpool the following year.
But five years after leaving Chelsea, Ingle returned ahead of the 2018/19 season. She has won nine trophies since: five Women’s Super League titles, three FA Cups, the Continental Cup and the Community Shield.
On this week’s episode, Ingle shares how her time at the club has differed over her two spells.
'The first spell was when it was semi-professional,’ she said. ‘I was studying at university in Wales in Cardiff, so I used to travel twice a week to train with Chelsea on a Tuesday and Thursday night.
‘We’d play at the weekend and drive to Staines, where our home pitch was, or meet the team somewhere for an away game on the bus.
‘We used to train 8pm to 10pm on the astroturf and then not get home until 1am, then go to university the next day. Fast forward four or five years later to come back and it’s fully professional, day training, training every day – it is very, very different.’
Ingle has been part of the women’s game since the days, as she highlights, she was a semi-professional playing in front of a few hundred fans to now selling out Stamford Bridge.
‘Looking back now at how far the game has come and especially at Chelsea, with how the team has grown over the six years since I’ve been here, it is really exciting,’ added the 32-year-old.
‘There was a thousand people in the stand and now we’re selling out stadiums – and that’s a regular occurrence. It’s kind of what we expect and what we deserve as players. We have to give that on the pitch and show the quality to bring the fans back week after week.’
A serial winner at Chelsea, Ingle spoke about what mindset is required to have the success she is now so familiar with.
‘We are going to be competing for the trophies every single year and you have to be ready to get to the finals,’ said Ingle.
‘Everyone has a level head here and I think that goes a long way at the top of women’s football. Everyone has to be at their best, but also ready for those challenges because it is not easy.
‘You play a game every three of four days, you’re always on the road, you’re not home much. Sometimes you play a lot and sometimes you don’t, as an individual, but you have to be ready for when you are needed on the pitch.’
