Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez have been the fulcrum of the Chelsea team this season, and the South American duo have discussed their on-field relationship and how Enzo Maresca has aided their development.
Caicedo has started every Premier League game for us so far this term, with Fernandez joining him in the middle of the park from the off on 20 occasions. Most commonly the pair have lined up in a central midfield two, with Cole Palmer ahead of them and two wingers on the flanks. Sometimes, though, such as at Villa Park on Saturday, Fernandez has been deployed in a more advanced role.
Watching Fernandez and Caicedo work in tandem is a pleasure. They blend destruction with creativity, adding bite to our midfield, and helping those up the pitch. The feeling, it seems, is mutual.
‘The two of us are very happy to play together,’ says Caicedo.
‘It is easier when you speak the same language. I believe we can make things easier. He does it for me as much as I do it for him - how we fight for every ball, how we talk to each other.’
Fernandez is in agreement.
‘We communicate well on the field, we help each other, and we give each other instructions,’ the Argentinean adds.
‘We always try to help the team also since we are in the middle. We are in the middle of the field, we see everyone, we manage everything and well, we always try our best for the team and help our team-mates.’
Both Caicedo and Fernandez have benefitted from Maresca’s tactical acumen this season. The Italian was a midfielder in his playing days, so has also been able to offer insight and advice about that position.
‘He’s very intelligent when it comes to working for each game,’ Caicedo states.
‘He knows that if we do the things they tell us, it will work for us in the end. We are all happy to have him here and working with him every day.
‘We are also working hard so that work he has done is shown on the field, and to give him joy as well, as he gives everything in every training session and every game.’
One of the tweaks Maresca has implemented this season is encouraging Fernandez to take up more advanced positions, even when he is in a deeper midfield two.
The head coach and the player have been rewarded. Fernandez has already netted four league goals this season, and his assist count in all competitions stands at an impressive eight.
‘His influence on my position I am playing now on the offensive side has greatly influenced me,’ Fernandez enthuses.
‘The truth is that I have grown a lot with him. He has given me a lot of tools so that I can grow and understand the position. As we said, Moi and me, he is also very clear when it comes to giving instructions for preparing for the games, the training sessions runs are very well, very demanding. We like that.
‘We are very comfortable with Enzo Maresca. I think he has taught us as a group, each of our teammates, and we have grown a lot with this time we had with him, which is a short time. We are in a club like Chelsea, which is very big and very good, it demands that of us every day, and we are very happy to have him.’
