After featuring for 90 minutes and scoring in each of the first three matches under new boss Hansi Flick, Werner has reason to be pleased with his international form.

The next test comes in Hamburg against Romania on Friday night, a game that Werner will hope to start once again after earning the trust of Flick in the first international get-together of the season last month.

‘It’s always good when you can feel the trust of the coach,’ Werner said this week. ‘He does that with all the players. He’s very close to the players and makes us feel like we’re important to the team.

‘We’re also allowed to make mistakes. He then addresses them positively and says what we should improve. Every player can use that.

‘I’m very happy that I was allowed to play so much. With a new coach, everyone wants to prove themselves and it’s a fresh start. Of course, the number of goals can improve but I scored in every game so far and that was good for me.’

The arrival of Romelu Lukaku at Stamford Bridge has added attacking competition for the 25-year-old at club level, making the first two months of 2021/22 even more challenging, but Werner insists he is motivated to fight for his place in the team.

‘The last few weeks have been difficult,’ he continued. ‘After many years, I was suddenly a little behind and had to fight my way again.

‘A career always goes up and down, never steadily upwards, so you have to learn to deal with it. I have to bite into it again and that challenges me.

‘I can’t be satisfied if I don’t play because I want to be a regular in a big team but I’m not saying that if I don’t play 10 or 15 games from the start by Christmas, I really want to leave. Of course, I would like to see more minutes in the game so I just give it my all in training.’
