Ahead of today’s early kick-off at the London Stadium, we pick out a couple of themes from past encounters between the Blues and the Irons…
This fixture has produced seven winning goals from the 85th minute on, the most of any Premier League match-up. Those include each of the past three: Arthur Masuaku for the Hammers in December 2021’s 3-2, Christian Pulisic’s only goal of the game at the Bridge in April 2022, and Kai Havertz’s late stinger in the reverse fixture this season.
Chelsea have claimed the spoils from four of the past east/west league derbies and we could claim a third victory in succession against the hosts this weekend. It is 12 years since the Blues last did that to the Irons, though our best record against them is six consecutive league wins between 2006 and 2008, concluding with our biggest-ever win at West Ham: 4-0.
‘Big six’ ups and downs for Moyes
David Moyes has faced Chelsea more times in his coaching career than any other club: 45 matches in all competitions. His first ever Premier League win over the Blues came at the 17th attempt in February 2010 at Goodison Park. Last season’s 3-2 was his sixth success – each of them on home soil. Similarly, all four career league wins against Arsenal and Liverpool, and three against Man United were at home.
The only members of the so-called ‘big six’ the Scot has defeated on their own ground in the Premier League are Manchester City (five of his 12 victories overall) and Tottenham (six home wins, three away). None were with West Ham and even last year, when they finished seventh, the Hammers lost every top-six trip.
Yet the Irons also beat the Blues, Liverpool and Tottenham at the London Stadium in 2021/22, and held Manchester City. This season they have lost to City and drawn with Spurs, who they visit next weekend.
