Wieke Kaptein was one of the new Chelsea faces on show at Kingsmeadow yesterday and she marked the occasion by scoring her first goal for the club.
The 19-year-old started in central midfield for Sonia Bompastor’s Blues and netted on the brink of half-time to put us 4-0 up. It was her final contribution before being replaced by Sophie Ingle during the break.
It finished 9-0 as we returned to KT1 in style, and Kaptein spoke afterwards about a fantastic day at Kingsmeadow.
‘I’m really happy with our attacking intent,’ she said.
‘Sonia said we wanted to score a lot of goals and show the fans what we can do this year. We did that.
‘It’s goosebumps to be with this team on the field. It’s an honour and I’m really happy to be here.’
Kaptein spent last season on loan at Twente having signed from the Dutch club in the summer of 2023. The Netherlands international, regarded as one of the brightest young talents in the game, is loving life working with Bompastor as she prepares for her maiden campaign in English football.
‘She’s really good, also her assistant Camille is also really good. The team like her and we are going well with each other. We’ve taken steps together and that’s really important. We know each other now really well after America.
‘The team and the trainers give me trust so I can do whatever I can,’ added Kaptein.
‘I want to show the things I can do on the field and help the team a lot. On the field, off the field, I want to be there for them. I’m hoping we can win a lot of titles.’
