Mia Fishel scored her first international goal last night as USA defeated Colombia 3-0, while Sam Kerr bagged a hat-trick in a big win for Australia over the Philippines.
Fishel came off the bench at half-time with the friendly game in San Diego goalless, and wasted little time making an impact.
Ten minutes of the second period had elapsed when our striker found space in the six-yard box to confidently head in a right-wing cross and celebrate with her customary fish celebration (top).
America added two more goals to record an impressive result against a side who proved such tricky customers at the World Cup earlier this year.
In Australia, Kerr added to her goal against Iran on Thursday with a clinical hat-trick as the Maltidas thrashed the Philippines 8-0 in an Olympic Games qualifier.
Captain Kerr scored her first and Australia’s second with a first-time finish from Caitlin Foord’s cutback. Kerr set up Foord to make it 3-0, before our star completed her hat-trick with Australia goals five and six, either side of the interval.
Kerr raced clear to thump the ball into the roof of the net in time added on at the end of the first half. She took just 24 seconds of the second to ensure the matchball was hers, heading in Mary Fowler’s inviting cross.
Foord completed her own hat-trick shortly after. The other goalscorers in Perth were Fowler and Clare Wheeler.
Australia next play Chinese Taipei on Wednesday.
Also this weekend just gone, three Blues started for Canada as they conceded an injury-time goal to lose 1-0 to Brazil in a friendly.
Jessie Fleming was in midfield, Kadeisha Buchanan on the left of the back three and Ashley Lawrence deployed at right wing-back.
Canada goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan was in top form throughout, but was powerless to stop a horribly deflected long-range effort from Debinha beating her with virtually the last kick.
Before then, Fleming captained Canada in the absence of Christine Sinclair, who will retire from international football later this year. However, Fleming exited the action early on 22 minutes with a suspected migraine. She passed the armband to Buchanan. She completed the whole game while Lawrence was replaced midway through the second half.
