Ben Chilwell, announced as being back in the England squad earlier in the week, has given his reaction to his recall to the Three Lions fold.

The Chelsea left-sider was speaking to our official Twitter when the word delighted was used to describe how he must be feeling to once again be on Gareth Southgate’s list, where he is joined by Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount and Reece James.

‘Yeah, for sure,’ Chilwell responded. ‘It’s been probably nearly a year now since my last call-up.

‘Obviously I have had the injury, which has stopped me having the chance to play for my country for the past eight or nine months so [I’m] just really, really excited to be back and hopefully I can get some game time. It’s very exciting going into the World Cup.’

The 25-year-old last represented his nation in two big wins just one or two weeks before he injured an ACL in a Champions League match. The previous month he had hit the net for England in a 5-0 win in Andorra in the middle of a hot goalscoring run for Chelsea.

Those were World Cup qualifiers and with England having made it through to this winter’s tournament in Qatar, the two games later this month are the last internationals before then – UEFA Nations League fixtures away to Italy and home to Germany.

It is chance for Chilwell to stake his claim to be part of the World Cup party as he looks forward to this England camp.

‘I think everyone is going to be go there full of confidence, excited, just looking forward to getting back together and working hard, leading into the World Cup,’ he said.
